“rainbow” wedding canopy

remodelled 2014

COMMISSIONED BY THE WOLMAN FAMILY FOR HOLY BLOSSOM TEMPLE • TORONTO ONTARIO

The image on this chuppah represents a successful marriage: colourful elements begin at the upper right as interlaced threads which, through the passage of time, shift and form themselves into a rainbow of hope for the future of the couple and the Jewish people. On the silk ribbons that cascade to the ground is painted the last of the seven wedding benedictions, as well as a dedication to Harriet and Frank, who commissioned it originally in 1984.

On the upper layer of pale blue cloth are appliquéd seven glistening stars, in part an acknowledgment of the felicitation in the marriage ceremony regarding having many children.

Because the bimah was repositioned, it has not been possible to utilize this suspended chuppah in the sanctuary. Rabbi Splansky and Harriet asked that I design a free-standing structure to support it on the upper bimah or elsewhere in the building for a variety of special events and holidays.
