A “BAKER’S DOZEN” OF TORAH MANTLES

2006

COMMISSIONED BY CONGREGATION OR SHALOM • LONDON ONTARIO

After several amalgamations and closing of rural congregations, Or Shalom found itself with a treasury of Torah scrolls arrayed with a hodge-podge of mantles.

Not all of the scrolls were still kosher, but each had a place in the ark.  Each had its own calligraphic style, history and size.  And so I endeavoured to express this individual uniqueness in a harmonious aesthetic and within a modest budget.

The colour palette was inspired by the needlework parochet created by women of the congregation.

The scrolls that did not have a silver breastplate were given a fabric breastplate, each with a different menorah design.
