hanukkiot for my daughters

2002-3

COLLABORATION WITH MOSHE ZABARI

Naomi’s birth sign is Gemini. She is fire and water, black pearl and white pearl.

Melanie’s birth sign is Aries, and thus a stylized ram’s horn on the bird’s crest holds the shammash candle. Melanie is also a bird-watcher, at home in forest and water.

Moshe Zabari encouraged me early in my artistic explorations to continue creating thoughtful ritual Judaica.  Moshe returned to his native Jerusalem after a distinguished career as the chief silversmith at the Jewish Museum in New York. With the winnings from the Spertus prize, I commissioned him to make these hanukkiot for my daughters . . . and to have the opportunity to work with him to create beauty during the rugged time of the Second Intifada and Gulf War .
