“Family tree” prayer shawl

2005

COMMISSIONED FOR SEAN’S BAR MITZVAH • TORONTO ONTARIO

When I asked Sean what had special meaning for him, he immediately said, “Family”. That declaration led to the idea of two family trees: his mother’s family on the left, and his father’s on the right, with him and his siblings in the centre.

Sean and his mother stencilled the names on fabric, which were cut into ginkgo leaves – the most enduring tree on earth – and embroidered onto the rich border.

Being Cohanim, the priestly colours appear in each corner.
