Cover for a framed scroll of / megillat Esther

1985

COMMISSIONED FOR HOLY BLOSSOM TEMPLE • TORONTO ONTARIO

The cover was commissioned to protect the eighteenth-century Italian megillah  (scroll) from receiving too much light.  It is hung over the manuscript during the summer months and below it during low-light conditions.

The text, in Hebrew and English, is from the final verses of the “Book of Esther”, and describes the holiday of Purim, during which the book is read: “a day of joy and feasting and gift-giving”.

The colours and rich silks and laces capture the spirit and express in a contemporary textile idiom the essential qualities of the historical piece.
