prayer shawl for rabbi plaut

1976

COMMISSIONED BY RABBI W. GUTHER PLAUT • TORONTO ONTARIO

One day, quite unexpectedly, Rabbi Plaut asked me to weave him a tallit. This was the fortuitous beginning of my career in Judaic textiles, since I had not until then thought of applying my commitment to Judaism, interest in literary symbolism, and experience as a textile artist to religious art.

It was fascinating that one of the two remaining tallitot in this original run was purchased, complete with tzitzit, by Rev. Fred Styles, an Anglican minister.

Materials: viscose chenille

Techniques: hand-woven in Monk’s Belt pattern
