“days of creation” prayer shawl

original version commissioned by rabbi steve garten  • ottawa ontario

later version owned by rabbi fred eisenberg • cleveland ohio

The story of Creation (Genesis 1) is symbolically represented. It seemed to me that what God was doing was organizing the various elements and substances of tohu b’bohu (chaos) into functioning systems. The six horizontal bands, starting at the bottom represent the active days: God separated light from darkness on the first day; sky from water on the second day, and so on.

The collar – a single unit in gold – symbolizes Shabbat.

Materials: Wool, cotton, metallic fibres

Techniques: 8-harness Summer and Winter weave
