Sam, as a sensitive and imaginative Bar Mitzvah, identified with the physical and emotional rite of passage experienced by Jacob after his dream. The text, "and here is the ladder resting on the ground, its top reaching into the sky" (Genesis 28:12) is woven painstakingly into the cloth.

The ladder, which is supported by the rocks and letterforms, becomes the atarah reaching up and encircling Sam.
