"Noah's Ark" Tapestry

Variety of materials; appliqué
122 x 152 cm (4'x5")
For a private home, Boca Raton FL

The differing orders in which Noah and his family entered and left the ark resulted in a midrash: during the flood men and women kept themselves separate; however, they left the ark [right side of tapestry] as couples to begin repopulating the earth. The rainbow shines on a spiral of emerging life.

Ours is not the only flood story. There are two versions in Genesis–one lasting 40 days, the other 150 days–as well as tales by the Sumer-ians, Mesopotamians, and North American native peoples. The single common element of all these is the raven. Shown lurking in the ark's shadow is the Haida Trickster Raven.
