Cover for a Framed Scroll of Esther
Mixed fabrics
Stencilling and appliqué
Two sections: 36 x 53 cm. (14" x 21") and 36 x 163 cm. (14" x 64")
Holy Blossom Temple, Toronto ON
The cover was commissioned to protect the eighteenth-century Italian megillah from receiving too much light. It is hung over the manuscript during the summer months and below it during low-light conditions.
The typography which I designed to give a similar flavour in Hebrew and English, is from the final verses of the scroll, and describes the holiday of Purim, during which the book is read: "a day of joy and feasting and gift-giving".
The colours and rich silks and laces capture the spirit and express in a contemporary textile idiom the essential qualities of the historical piece.
