Shabbat Table Coverings

Cotton brocade, silk, lace, beads, bells
Appliqué, construction
Upper cloth 117 x 152 cm. (46" x 60"); underskirt 196 x 241 cm. (77" x 95")
Commissioned by Harriet Lampert for Temple Har Zion honouring Mordy Shapiro's significant birthday

The set is designed for the table in front of the bimah where the candles are lit and wine blessed each Shabbat.

Because Mordy is a cohon (priestly family), the upper cloth shows 18 (chai) pomegranates and bells, recalling the embroidery on the high priest's robe.

A letter shin extends from each corner, and a flame grows from each arm of each shin, repre-senting the whole Jewish people. At the front two tiny bead birds sing of the love of Mordy and Harriet.
