"Full Moon Through Oleander" Eternal Light
Beads and natural stones, glass, brass
Beading and construction
30 cm diameter x 10 cm deep (12 x 4)
Inspired by traditional Japanese design for silk-screen printing, which creates visually suspen-ded elements networked with each other. The beaded leaves and branches in slight relief create an interesting play of light and shadow against the opalescent hand-blown Italian glass.
As in nature each leaf is unique, reminding us of the Talmudic dictum that to understand the Invisible, look carefully at the visible. We glimpse the moon through its reaching upper leaves, mindful of Judaism’s lunar calendar and female modes. The open areas reference the Japanese concept of emptiness as stated by contemporary designer Hara Mara: "If you make a space with nothing in it, the hope is that perhaps [God] will reside there."
This unique piece is available for purchase.
