Wedding Canopy for Holy Blossom Temple, Toronto
Polyester, silk, metallic fabrics; marine fittings
Hand painted, appliqué
335 x 305 x 366 cm. (11' x 10' x 12')
Sometimes I make up a midrash. Here textiles becomes an analogy for relationships.
This chuppah represents a successful marriage: diverse colourful elements begin at the upper right as interlaced threads which, through the passage of time, shift, realign and form themselves into an harmonious rainbow of hope.
On the silk rainbow that cascades to the floor is painted the last of the seven wedding benedictions, as well as a dedication to the donors. On the upper layer of pale blue cloth are appliquéed seven glistening stars to wish the couple good fortune, family and prosperity.
