Wedding Canopy for Temple Emanu-El, Toronto ON
Polyester, silk, marine fittings
Hand-painting and machine appliqué
3 triangles, 18' on each side
Because the weddings at Temple Emanu-El take place in the midst of the congregation, and because witnessing the vows is a neces-sary part of the marriage, I designed an expansive form which brings the congrega-tion also under the chuppah.
Triangular elements are present in architec-tural details, such as the rose window and lecterns. But primarily these 'sails' are a tri-bute to the passionate yachtsman in whose memory the chuppah was commissioned.
The Hebrew phrase, with lettering style inspired by Ben Shahn, means "Blessed is the Lord who causes the Bride and Groom to rejoice."
